Choosing the Algarve as my destination to visit was decided while looking at the website of a time- share I had signed up for. The pictures on the website made my choice a whole lot easier- ‘the power of travel photography ’. I booked a self-catering apartment for two; sorted out flights and even got a car hire and it was all set for us to have this escape. Next was making sure my children were going to be fine. Which meant, all arrangements for the day to day for them ; School run, Adult supervision, shopping, everything needed to be arranged. I had booked an evening flight and the departure time was for 7pm, with arrival at Portugal for 10pm. If you ask me, why arrive at a strange place so late at night? My response would be why not? The flight and hire car combination turned out to be a good idea.

Boat trip visiting the caves in the Algarve coast.

At the airport- Stansted, everything went smoothly. This meant we had time to sit in one of the executive lounges, a good perk to have as part of your credit card package, if you are going to be travelling a lot.

When the time to head to the boarding gate came, I didn’t fancy the dreadfully long walk to board the flight. Ryanair (yes, the very same one where their pilots are known to go on strike) is my preferred airline choice when visiting Europe. Being a seasoned Ryanair traveller, I knew I had to be warmly dressed as the boarding staff have this funny habit of checking passengers in to board, then making them wait in cold corridors for what usually seems like an endless amount of time.

Finally, we board the plane in good time. The flight was smooth and I slept for most of it then we were in Faro Airport. I didn’t realise how late it was until landing at the rather deserted airport and almost everything was shut. Picking up the car from the hiring service was very quick and the staff were very helpful with setting up the sat nav. The drive from the airport to the resort was a bit longer than we had hoped. Remember this is late at night (11:30 pm).

I was a bit concerned that everywhere was closed but, the resort had a ready-made protocol for late arrivals which had given me the confidence to buy the late tickets initially. We get to the area where our resort was and the sat nav seemed a bit confusing. Very lonely narrow roads in the dead of night seem even narrower with the odd car driving past us. Tentatively, we park in a driveway of a place we thought was our resort and I came out of the car to press the bell with instructions on how to call for our keys. Guess what? We were in the wrong resort, so we had to back track as we had taken the wrong turn at a roundabout a few metres back. We finally located the resort and collected the keys from the security guard a few minutes after, I was very relieved that my thoughts of a worse case scenario of having to sleep in the strange car, parked in a strange place, in a strange country was not to be.

To be continued
